Level 5 Technician Scientist Apprenticeship (Bioscience) - Lonza Biologics

This is an exciting opportunity to join Lonza as a Technician Scientist apprentice. As a Level 5 apprentice, you will gain valuable experience, alongside achieving a Foundation Degree in Applied Bioscience.

Salary £15,000 per annum
Holiday Entitlement 25 days plus bank holidays
Qualifications Required A minimum of 80 UCAS points from at least 2 A Level subjects including Biology or Chemistry, and an additional Science or Maths
Location Slough
Working Hours Shift work patterns, 6am – 6pm. 4 days on, 4 days off rotation
Duration 39 months
Start Date January 2020
Interview Date 19th December 2019

  • Ongoing maintenance of own GMP training file ensuring training has taken place in appropriate aspects of the production activities
  • Ensure all core GMP training sessions are attended and up to date

Deviations & CAPAs

  • Be sufficiently trained to write comments where appropriate
  • Inform management of any issues immediately


  • Ensure that high standards of documentation completion and creation are adhered to according to current good manufacturing practice (cGMP)
  • Order new logbooks from QA Document Issuing to ensure that log books is always available for use

Plant, Process & BATCH OWNERSHIP

For example:

  • Identify, and implement where appropriate, Continuous Improvements to the process/equipment/working practices and procedures
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment e.g. pH meters / conductivity meters/ osmometers etc.
  • Decontaminating biological waste
  • Cleaning biological safety cabinets
  • Cleaning Inoculum Labs
  • Perform daily checks of inoculum
  • Assist in the preparation of stock solutions and media preparations
  • Return materials to warehouse
  • Maintaining equipment spares
  • Ensure laboratories are fully stocked with consumable items
  • Report faulty equipment and damaged fabric to Engineering in a timely manner
  • Be point of contact for pipette maintenance and calibration

To be eligible for this position you will need;

  • 5 GCSE’s at grade A*-C inc Maths and English and Science, and
  • A minimum of 80 UCAS points from at least 2 A Level subjects including Biology or Chemistry, and an additional Science or Maths.

  • Understanding and commitment to Science & Engineering
  • Show aptitude to working in a team


You will study towards a Foundation Degree in Applied Bioscience, with University of Kent, predominantly through Distance Learning.

Work based and knowledge competencies to be delivered in line with the Standard / Framework guidelines. This will include;

  • Functional skills
  • Full recognised apprenticeship qualification
  • On the job competency training

Knowledge qualification may be applicable


On completion of the Apprenticeship, candidates will be able to apply for further positions.


  • Applicants must be 18 years or older upon starting the apprenticeship due to it being shift work.
  • The hours of work will be 6am – 6pm, on 4 day rotations. Please ensure your planned method of travel will get you to site for 6am.
  • The apprentice must be able to demonstrate the required attitudes, behaviours and interpersonal skills associated with the professional workplace.
